Article: Do Not Accept Credit Card Payments Through Paypal

Thank author of this post/commentFor most freelancers, accepting payment via Paypal is already the de facto way of accepting payments. Almost everyone has it and it is already some sort of payment standard not only among freelancers, but also among online establishments as well. However, what is not know to many freelancers is that they could possibly get into trouble with Paypal if the payment was made through a credit card.

I think this article offers some very bad advice. The fact is that no matter what form of payment you receive via paypal, the sender has rights to dispute it within 45 days.

It is important to:

- Build up a balance in paypal to cover any disputes

- Response PROMPTLY to any disputes and provide detailed information showing the work was completed.

Failure to follow those points will lead to your paypal account being suspended.

Complaints are a fact of life for businesses and when you freelance you are in business for yourself. That is one of the headaches freelancers have that regular employees don't.

Joseph,

The difference here is that Paypal has an established dispute resolution system that will allow you to show evidence that you have completed your work. I don't understand how researching the profile of your client can be bad advice.

In contrast, credit card-facilitated payments there is another company (the credit card company) that gets into the transaction. Paypal does not have seller protection facilities in this case. Naturally, the credit card is almost always going to protect the interest of its clients and there's nothing that you can do about it. You can escalate it to the proper authorities but it's going to be messy especially if we are talking about international transactions.

Of course researching the profile of a client is a good idea.

However, both paypal and the credit card companies have well defined dispute resolution systems. Both will allow you to show evidence that you satisfactorily completed your end of the transaction.

Remember with the credit card company, they have TWO CLIENTS. The cardholder and the merchant. They need to protect both sides and have both legal and contractual obligations on both sides.

Before using any payment processing system, to send, or receive funds, it would be wise to read their contracts and rules in detail.

Yes, and in this case, the merchant is Paypal because it is Paypal that the credit card company has interaction with. Not you. It is liable to Paypal. Not you. In fact, it was specifically mentioned in the blog post linked in the article that for credit card-facilitated payments, the Seller Protection facility does not cover you.

It would help if you would read the comments in that blog about people's experiences so that you will be able to know more about how credit-card payments actually work, rather than what is in theory.

Always read the fine print and be cautious whenever doing anything with money and the internet. That's the basic rule one should follow. Always read every one of those little agreements so many of us blindly tick as accepting without actually looking at it, and always double check when ever you get a funny feeling that something isn't right with your billing or payments.

The credit card issuer: The bank, credit card company, credit union, etc., that issues a credit/debit card., not PayPal, decides whether a chargeback is valid. However, we may be able to help you dispute unwarranted chargebacks.

When you follow the guidelines of our Seller Protection Policy, you are protected against fraudulent chargebacks.

The seller protection policy specifically protects you in the cause of charge backs.

Of course, you need to then follow paypal's rules. To avoid a chargeback or have one reversed, you need to follow the credit card companies rules.

The bottom line is you need to be able to demonstrate you did the work. And, you need to respond promptly!
